Duration: 12 -15 months + Client is seeking a Senior Unix Systems Administrator. The team has production support, internal customer support and engineering responsibilities. The systems supported are business critical and the team maintains a high standard of uptime for external customers. To that end, the production environment is engineered to be highly available and multiply redundant. Unix staff is on-call to repair production problems 7 x 24 on a rotating basis. A pager and cell phone will be provided by the company; a PC can be provided for off hour VPN support. Principal Responsibilities: * Designs/implements complex local and wide-area networks of machines. This includes the mission-critical clustered Unix environment. * Manages a large site of development, quality assurance (QA), and production machines. * Works under general direction from senior management. * Establishes/recommends policies on system use and services. * Provides technical lead and/or supervises system administrators, system programmers, or others of equivalent seniority. * Has some responsibility for purchase justification. Experience/Skills: Required: * A solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts, can use performance analysis to tune systems. * A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, and design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts. * Strong understanding of clustered UNIX environments for mission-critical production work. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, project plans, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customer or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management. * Ability to solve problems quickly and completely. * Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them. * Knowledge of Trading Systems, Market Data Services, or finance background * Experience with EMC Symmetrix storage systems * Experience with Veritas Foundation Suite of products * Ability to program in an administrative language (Tk, Perl, a shell) Preferred: * Experience with Legato Networker, Tibco Rendezvous, Solaris Jumpstart, cfengine, DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS * Design and implementation of a disaster recovery facility for Unix systems Mission Control/FIX Support (18443) The Goldman Sachs Algorithmic Trading SysOps (Systems Operations) team is involved in the production operational management of client-facing and internal trading systems across Equities product lines. Businesses supported include Algorithmic Trading, Program Trading, Block Trading, Market Making and Client Direct Market Access. Responsibilities will be diverse and grow with an individual's abilities and contributions. Immediate responsibilities will include ownership of the production environment: * providing systems support for global application suites. * troubleshooting trade issues including algorithm behavior. * troubleshooting systems issues including connectivity. * providing high availability including production failover. * troubleshooting network/ infrastructure/ Linux server/ Microsoft server issues. * monitoring system and application capacities. * make proactive suggestions to improve SysOps procedures and tools. A wide range of customer trading issues will be diagnosed and resolved, including front end GUI (Graphical User Interface), FIX communication interfaces, internal Order Management Servers, Algorithmic Trading engine, Exchange Connectivity, Post Execution. A major responsibility will include our RediPlus client trading product (see www.redi.com). Experience/Skills: Knowledge of UNIX environment (Solaris, AIX or Linux) is essential. Financial industry experience is important. Knowledge of shell scripting is a big plus (Perl or K-Shell). Understanding of the FIX Protocol is a plus. Willingness to learn.
