Sr. Unix System Admin. in Chicago, IL
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Senior UNIX Systems Administrator reports to the Information Technology (IT) Manager. The Senior UNIX Systems Administrator is responsible for the basic administration of a UNIX site; including system installation and configuration, fundamentals of security and installation of third party software.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluate, install, debug, audit, maintain and document UNIX server farms and optimizes UNIX operating systems, and applications
2. Provides 2nd and 3rd tier support for corporate systems and user applications including participating in Shift Desk support.
3. Assists in managing the OS test, release, and push process
4. Automate configuration, monitoring, and asserting the state of production servers network equipment, and storage
5. Participate in 24x7 support delivery model
6. Supports and implements system standards, processes and security to maintain corporate IT standards.
7. Maintains, updates and audits system documentation.
8. Adds and maintains users on the network; assigning application access, ensuring security, and maintaining their configuration are within standards.
9. Trains users in applications and UNIX fundamentals
10. Analyzes project needs or requirements and recommends systems
11. Maintains and communicates project plans and status updates
12. Other duties as assigned.

Senior UNIX Systems Administrator
Experience:
Six to eight years UNIX systems administration experience in large financial services or trading industry environments of >500 servers, >1000 users, and >10 terabytes of disk storage
Strong knowledge and experience in UNIX scripting, automation, and architecture in large production server environments from the design phase on
Thorough knowledge and understanding of UNIX characteristics and limitations, including standard daemons, protocols, and applications
Knowledge of UNIX system/network performance issues, plateaus, and solutions
Knowledge of IP networking concepts
Experience with network security (for example, building firewalls, deploying authentication systems, or applying cryptography to network applications. Experience with host security (for example, passwords, uids/gids, file permissions, file system integrity, use of security packages).
