My client is looking for a Systems Monitoring Engineer to architect, design, implement and support a systems monitoring infrastructure. This Engineer will lead the implementation of the monitoring system that will proactively alert support staff of any problems in the system. One of the main responsibilities of this Monitoring Engineer role is working with the application support team to monitor applications and database servers and the developers to add any instrumentation needed to monitor software status. This candidate must have 4+ years of Microsoft Windows and Linux/UNIX experience. In this role you will create a visual and physical representation of the current system status on large viewable monitors throughout the trading floor, covering three continents. You will work with IT to put all the following under active monitoring: External connectivity (exchanges, NY, LDN, CME/CBOT booths), internal network health: line status, throughput, and capacity, operating system health (memory, disk space, etc), hardware and power traps, server room temperature, power consumption, water detection, and UPS state. Experience: This Monitoring Engineer position requires strong knowledge of Windows Server 2000/2003, good Active Directory knowledge, and an understanding of performance counters and WMI. Strong knowledge of networking, some knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP multicast and NTP, an understanding of routers, switches and other networking devices, and strong knowledge in software management technologies are required. 2+ years of Microsoft Operations Management experience or any other equivalent monitoring framework, an understanding of performance counters and WMI/WBEM, an understanding of SNMP traps, and strong knowledge of software engineering best practices are also required. Candidates must possess strong knowledge in at least one language, (scripting or otherwise) excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent analytical skills, and excellent documentation and knowledge management skills are required.
