Systems Administrator, Linux in Chicago, IL
The systems administrator is responsible for performing systems management tasks on Linux and Solaris-based enterprise Servers and workstations, which include web Servers, Mail Servers, applications Servers, and departmental Linux and Solaris desktops and lab computers. Also designs, install, maintain and provide support for these environments. Key Responsibilities Manages user accounts; installs all software and operating system upgrades as well as all required patches and licenses. Maintains the security and integrity of the systems. Participates in the planning and acquisition of hardware, software and maintenance contracts for Servers and printers. Provides support for faculty with Unix/Linux-based workstations and configuration of print queues on these machines. Runs scheduled backups for Servers, and arranges for off-site storage for backup tapes. Requirements: BS degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education & experience At least three years of work experience with Linux. Strong knowledge and experience with Linux operating systems. Strong written, verbal and electronic communications with students, staff and faculty members. Knowledge of Sun Solaris operating system is a plus. Linux Certification in Red Hat is an advantage. Experience with setting up print queues, writing Shell Scripts, Perl, PHP, and scheduling cron jobs. Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to cultivate good working relationships with other departments as it relates to collaborating with other departmental system administrators.
