Senior Linux Systems Administrator in Chicago, IL
The Senior Linux Systems Administrator will coordinate the efforts of assigned Linux Systems Administrators and act as a technical lead. The Administrator will also analyze and resolve advanced problems associated with server hardware, UNIX application software and escalated customer problems, facilitate maintenance operations, performance and capacity planning, disk space management, system documentation and procedures and other operations specific responsibilities as needed. This person may be called on to communicate with criminal investigative organizations as necessary, attend strategy meetings and communicate system changes to other departments. This team leader is expected to provide weekly status reports detailing completed projects and any issues affecting operations, provide other metrics as required. The Senior Linux Systems Administrator must have the ability to manage hundreds of servers, assume the role of technical lead which shall include delegation of tasks, management of projects and outages as well as provide technical assistance to assigned System Administrators, write comprehensive documentation, help develop tools to monitor systems performance, and work on optimization and tuning of various systems.
This Administrator will be spending about 10% of his/her time on management and will be leading mostly by example.
Experience: This Linux Administrator must have a Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or similar technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (4+ years). An advanced familiarity with system administration on Linux is required. Hosting background strongly preferred, along with advanced skill to diagnose and remedy serious UNIX-related problems and/or failures promptly and effectively. This person must also have advanced ability to perform periodic software and hardware system updates, upgrades, backups and security patches, and have a desire and patience to work with other members of the staff to fix and improve existing services as well as add new ones. The ability to install, configure, optimize and maintain network services including but not limited to Apache, Bind, Sendmail and FTP and experience with Shell scripting, PERL or C is required. A working knowledge of MySQL required as well. Strong organizational and communication skills, basic networking knowledge, and availability for occasional on-call duties is also a requirement.
