Network Engineer in Chicago, IL
Our client is looking for Network Engineer II . The ideal candidate must have minimum five years of SOLID engineering experience. Previous experience with Network Operating Systems such as Novell NetWare or Windows Server Operating Systems, or telecommunications systems is required. He/she must have done Project Management in the past for IT. The ideal Network Engineer, for this position, must have excellent communication skills and must be client-facing. The ideal candidate must know technology and have managed a team, though he/she is not hands-on switches and routers, should have knowledge to work with them.
The Essential Functions of the Network Engineer II, will be to Performs tests, completes routine maintenance, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems. Installs and maintains hardware and software components related to the operation of the company’s computer server, data or voice network; makes recommendations on system configurations. Installs and maintains customer requested software applications. Initiates and participates in network related research using project management skills. Assists in developing standards and implementation plans for data or voice network technologies. Maintenance and installations should be completed according to established service standards to ensure responsive and courteous delivery of network services.
The incumbent will be responsible for one or more of the following functions, which is, the Network Engineer II will Implement and maintain the LAN and WAN segments. Integrates new application bandwidth requirements within the existing network infrastructure. Implements and maintains network equipment including, but not limited to, hubs, routers, bridges, gateways, and communication links. The Network Engineer II will also Implement and maintain the network server/workstation environment and voice systems. Provides configuration support, and conducts user training on network hardware and software. Administers peripheral equipment (printers, CD-ROMs, etc.). He/she should respond promptly to requests from user departments to review or change user profile configurations / network related configurations.
The Network Engineer II will consult with users to identify changes needed, which will provide opportunities to reduce costs, or permit greater efficiency or system integration. Recommends modifications to increase operational effectiveness, and to ensure service level expectations are consistently met. Investigates new procedures, equipment, or software to determine their applicability for capacity growth and operations.
The Network Engineer II serves as third level support for solving server, data or voice network related user application problems.
The Network Engineer II evaluates data or voice network/server utilization to identify opportunities for more efficient operations, or to expand the infrastructure. He/she redesigns or modifies existing and proposed infrastructure as needed.
The Network Engineer II provides assistance in planning and scheduling projects that impact data or voice network or system performance. Resolves problems. Investigates data or voice network software/hardware problems and coordinates problem resolution with software vendors, hardware manufacturers, and/or in-house IT support staff.
The Network Engineer II provides detailed and complete documentation, standardized design, and user operating procedures. Develops, updates, and maintains technical documentation and operating procedures.

Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or the equivalent of three to five years’ experience in infrastructure design and development required. Previous experience with one or more of the following equipment, software and subject matter is preferred, which are, Hubs, routers, gateways, bridges, and communication links; Network cabling: Token ring, Ethernet, and serial communication; Voice network cabling, peripherals, hardware or software; Common network protocols: may include, but not limited to: TCP/IP, IPX, SNA, SPX, and NETBIOS; Cisco supported products; Systems Management tools; Virtual Technologies; Transmission media (twisted pair, fiber); Transmission types (Asynchronous, Synchronous, and CD/CSMA) Previous Experience with Network Operating Systems such as Novell NetWare or Windows Server Operating Systems, or telecommunications systems is required. The ideal candidate must be proficient in the use of a PC, with the ability to use DOS, Windows, Desktop Applications Suite software packages, and other Windows based software. The ideal candidate must be able to work with customers and external vendors. Must have the ability to work with little direction, have the demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects, and have the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
