Director of Technology in Chicago, IL
Summary of Responsibilities:
Working as a team member with the Chief Operating Officer and other firm administrators, this position has overall responsibility for all firm-wide systems and technology functions. The Director will manage the technology operations of the firm to function smoothly and economically, and is expected to creatively define and enhance the scope of the technology operation. In addition to working with, developing and delegating projects to other members of the IT Department, the Director of Technology will have hands-on responsibilities for many aspects of the firm's technology operations.
Butler Rubin's existing technology platform consists of Lotus Notes for mail and numerous databases, Interwoven for document management, Summation for litigation support, Citrix for remote access, and Elite for accounting, time and billing. Most lawyers and some of the other firm personnel use laptops in docking stations, as well as Blackberries.
Essential position responsibilities include:
. Provides and directs all administrative management of the Technology Department.
. Anticipates needs and provides cost-effective solutions to the technology systems and automation requirements of the firm-wide technology function.
. Directs the technology project management and execution, including providing leadership in the execution of Firm initiatives.
. Recommends annual and long-range technology plans, developing supporting budgets (both operational and capital) for all information systems and office automation.
. Works with the Technology Partner and Technology Sounding Board to gain consensus among Firm management, administration and the user community to set strategy in the technology area.
. Evaluates, recommends and procures appropriate hardware and software.
. Develops and executes project management plans to achieve desired timelines as systems and programs are selected, purchased, installed, enhanced or further developed.
. Oversees the appropriate controls regarding use, storage and archiving of information.
. Represents the firm in its interaction with technology vendors and consultants.
. Manages and maintains the peripheral hardware inventory.
. Manages all technology contracts and licensing agreements.
. Coordinates with the paraprofessionals relative to litigation support services.
. Manages the outsourced help desk and on-site troubleshooting as needed.
. Manages training of all levels of office personnel on new and existing technology.
. Manages special projects as assigned from time to time
Desired qualifications and experience:
. Bachelor's degree in MIS, Computer Science or a related area
. Five years of progressively-increased responsibilities, three of which are in a supervisory capacity.
. Law firm experience is desired.
. In-depth technical background and abilities with the various programs currently in use is desired, particularly as it relates to Lotus Notes.
. Well-developed organizational and prioritization skills and a personal philosophy of "under-promising and over-delivering".
. A strong focus on customer service with a commitment to working closely with other members of the administration team.
. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen effectively and present oneself in a calm, professional manner under pressures of time and schedule.

Other:
. Eligible for a year-end performance bonus of between 10% and 20% (based on current guidelines).
